On the book's Amazon page, in the Product details block — the same list that gives the publisher, the language and the page count. Scroll past the description and look for a line beginning Best Sellers Rank. A Kindle edition is ranked in the Kindle Store, a paperback or hardcover in Books, and every edition of a title carries its own rank: the paperback's number says nothing about the ebook's, so read the rank on the edition you actually mean.

The first one, the store-wide rank. A listing typically reads Best Sellers Rank: #2,390,591 in Books, then two smaller numbers indented under it, such as #15,937 in First Contact and #79,854 in Humorous Fiction. Those are category ranks — Amazon ranks a book in up to three category lists — and a category holds a few thousand titles where the store holds millions, so the number always looks far better than the book is doing. Enter one here and the estimate comes out wildly too high. Use the top line: in Books, or in Kindle Store.

The one KDP shows you on its own pricing screen when you set your price. That number already has the printing cost taken out for a paperback or hardcover, and the delivery cost and VAT for a Kindle edition — which is exactly why we ask for it rather than for a list price and a percentage. A real KDP royalty is the rate minus the printing cost, and printing cost depends on your page count, trim size and ink, so a price and a percentage alone would overstate what you are actually paid. Leave it empty and you simply get the sales figure.

Yes, and it is what most people use it for: every rank on Amazon is public, so you can size a niche before writing in it, or find out what the book sitting above yours is really doing. Leave the royalty box empty for someone else's title — you can see a stranger's rank, never their price, their printing cost or what they spend on advertising. A book outselling yours can still be losing money on every copy.

No. Amazon publishes no sales figures for any book, its own included, and nothing in the world can look them up — the only public signal a book gives off is its rank, which is a position in a list rather than a count. That is the whole reason calculators like this one exist, and the reason every one of them, ours included, answers with an estimate. Only the author sees the real number, in their KDP reports.

No, and this is the most common misreading. A rank is a position, not a quantity: Amazon says itself that your rank can move when your sales have not, because it depends on what every other book did. It also carries a fading memory of the last several days rather than a reading of today, so it is still high the day after a spike. A rank answers how a book has been selling lately, never how many copies it sold this morning.

It depends on the store and the format, which is why any single answer you are given is probably wrong. As a shape: past #500,000 a book is selling under a copy a day; around #100,000 it sells steadily, which for most self-published titles is a real business; under #10,000 it is a strong seller; and inside the top 1,000 it is one of the store's genuine bestsellers. Those thresholds are far easier to reach in a smaller store, because fewer books compete for the position — put your own rank, format and store into the calculator above and it will tell you what each one is worth where you actually sell.

Far fewer than the phrase suggests, and there is no single number. The orange #1 Best Seller badge is awarded inside one of Amazon's CATEGORY lists, not across the store, and categories differ enormously in size — topping a narrow one can take a handful of sales in a day, while topping a broad one takes hundreds. It is also a live position rather than a title: it lasts exactly as long as nobody outsells you. Whatever your category, the rank to watch for is the category rank on your own listing, not the store-wide one you type into this calculator.

Amazon says it updates rankings hourly, and also that a change can take up to two days to appear. In practice a book in the top few thousand moves constantly, while one past #100,000 moves about once a day — so reloading the page every ten minutes tells you nothing new. It also means any single reading is a snapshot of a moment: the same book read in mid-December and again in February gives two different answers because the season changed, not the book.

Then it has never sold or been borrowed. Amazon is explicit about it — a book has no Sales Rank until it has been sold or borrowed at least once — so a new release shows nothing there until the first copy moves. That is a real state rather than a missing field, which is why nothing here answers a missing rank with a zero.

Every Amazon store is a separate list, with a different number of books competing in it. #5,000 on amazon.com and #5,000 on amazon.it are not comparable — the smaller store needs far fewer sales to reach that position. That is why this calculator asks which store you mean, and why a rank should never be averaged across countries.

Because Amazon ranks the formats in different populations. A paperback is ranked against every printed book in the store, while a Kindle edition is ranked only against ebooks. The same number therefore implies more sales in print — we measured that gap on a real paperback whose rank history we joined to its KDP royalties, and it is applied here. Audiobooks are deliberately absent: Audible ranks on its own list, we have never measured that relationship, and a number we cannot back is a number we will not print.

Yes. Amazon states plainly that Sales Rank and Category Rankings are based on sales AND borrows, and that a book has no rank at all until it has been sold or borrowed at least once. What Amazon has never published is how much a borrow weighs against a purchase — you will see confident figures for this elsewhere, and they are estimates, not disclosed facts. We have not measured it either, so the calculator reads the rank as it finds it instead of pretending to split it. The practical consequence for a book in KDP Select: part of the position you are reading was earned by pages being read rather than copies being bought, so the sales figure here will tend to overstate the paid copies.

Good enough to plan with, and nowhere near exact. It is built by joining real Amazon rank histories to the KDP royalty reports behind them — so it is calibrated against what those ranks actually earned, not against guesswork — and it is checked back against those same royalties. But a rank is a position rather than a count, and on its own it can be wrong about sales by a factor of twenty-five once the store and the format differ. That is why the answer comes with a range instead of a single confident number: the interval is not hedging, it is the width the evidence actually supports.

Because the curve is not equally well pinned everywhere. It is tightest through the middle, where the most evidence sits. It widens in the top 100, where a single promotion moves a title hundreds of places and almost nobody publishes real figures. And it widens again below one sale a day, where a single copy changes everything. A calculator that shows the same confidence at #90 and at #90,000 is not measuring anything.

Four reasons, and none of them is a fault in either number. A rank trails your sales instead of reporting them, carrying a decaying memory of the last few days, so it still reads high the day after a spike and low the day after a quiet week. It describes one store, while your KDP report covers all of them at once. A borrow moves the rank like a sale but arrives in your report as pages read. And Amazon leaves cancelled orders out of the rank entirely. For your own titles there is nothing to estimate in any case — the real figures are already in your KDP reports.
